A Tory councilor in Romford has been arrested on suspicion of possessing pornographic images of children.

The Tory member, 58 year old David Charles of Cranham, who was elected to Havering Council on May 4th was held in custody by police.

A police spokesman said: "We can confirm officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Team have arrested a 58-year-old man from the Havering area on suspicion of possessing indecent images of children. He was held in custody at an east London police station."

It is not known what grade of indecent images are alleged to be involved. Police bailed Mr Charles to return for further questioning in October.

Cllr. Charles was not available for comment as he is on holiday.

Under the circumstances a resignation followed by a by-election could result.
