Angry 'Happy-slap' gang viciously beat 59-year-old

These are the appalling injuries caused to the victim of a vicious and unprovoked so-called happy slap' attack in Bradford.

Herbert Innes, 59, was jumped on by a gang of thugs in Little Horton as he walked home from his daughter's 26th birthday celebrations.

He was punched and kicked so severely that his eyeball was detached from its socket and his cheek shattered.

As he recovered from his injuries today, he said: "Why did they pick on an old man? There's something wrong with these people. What they did was absolutely horrendous. I don't know how anyone can do that to another human being."

Mr Innes told how he saw one of the thugs filming the unprovoked attack on a mobile phone as the others laughed.

The attack occurred soon after he had left a working men's club where his daughter's birthday celebrations were being held.

He heard a car pull up behind him, then heard footsteps and turned only to be punched in the face and knocked to the ground.

He attempted to shield his face and body but the youths continued to kick and stamp on his face and head laughing as they did so.

Mr Innes said: "I had been celebrating my daughter's birthday with her and her mother. They went on to get something to eat and I decided to stay in the club for a while. I left at around 10.15pm and began to walk home.

"A car came up Little Horton Lane and stopped behind me, I turned around and then, wallop,

I was on the ground. There were three Asian lads and they just kept kicking me.

"I tried to curl up and protect myself but they didn't stop. I looked up at one point and I saw one of them filming it on his phone.

Eventually they stopped and I could hear them laughing. They must have got into the car and driven off. I managed to pick myself up and went home."

Mr Innes said when he woke the next day he realised the severity of his injuries.

"I went to the hospital and they told me my cheekbone was broken and that my eye's out of the socket," he said.

"I have to go back and get an operation. One of the specialists said he was amazed I hadn't lost my eye. He said I should try not to blow my nose or sneeze as that side of my face might cave in.

"I'm 59 years old. I get my pension next year. Why did they pick on an old man?

"There's something wrong with these people. What they did was absolutely horrendous. I don't know how anyone can do that to another human being.

"I think it must have been one of those "happy-slap" attacks. The whole thing is probably on YouTube by now."

Mr Innes, who has lived in the Little Horton area for eight years, said he had never had trouble before.

He said: "Everyone knows me here, I walk up and down that street every day.
"I don't bother anyone. I'm too scared to go out at night now after this, I'm terrified. I just hope they catch them before they do this to anyone else."

Little Horton ward Councillor Ian Greenwood, who is leader of the Council's Labour group, said: "I am shocked, appalled and angry at such a senseless, violent and apparently motiveless attack on someone merely going about their business.

"I hope and trust that the police will treat this incident extremely seriously and I would hope the presence of CCTV cameras in the area help in catching those responsible.

"There have been some highly publicised incidents involving the use of mobile phones to record attacks and post them on the internet.

"There needs to be a national, and indeed international response and greater policing of the internet to prevent such things occurring."

A Bradford South Police spokesman confirmed officers were investigating the attack which happened near the junction of Manchester Road and Park Road at about 10.30pm on Tuesday.

"The matter has been reported to us and we will go through the normal process of investigation," he said.

And yet this is only called an 'unprovoked attack' I would call it a racist attack, but i can't because the victim is white and the cretins are Asian.
