Russia will try to reform the Soviet Union with or without NATO expansion or intervention. If we as NATO however get in there first, then maybe we can hold Russia back for a while and hinder their plans.

But committing NATO forces to Georgia and other former soviet states will almost certainly make NATO-Russian relations worse.
