Bid to rename Shoreditch station 'Banglatown'

A CAMPAIGN of lobbying has started in a bid to rename the planned 'Shoreditch High Street' Overground station Banglatown... before it even opens.

It has come to light following pressure from the British Bangladeshi media at Ken Livingstone's press briefing on a 'walkabout' visit to East London on Friday (April 25).

But the Labour candidate, campaigning for a third term, refused to give his full endorsement.

"It should be up to the local people to decide," he said.

"There should be a consultation and a vote. I think we could go along with that.

"For me, I don't care what it's called."

The campaign centres on plans for the current major redevelopment of the old Bishopsgate goods terminal.

The old Shoreditch station closed two years ago, as part of the work to extend the East London Line.

The old station used to be in Brick Lane, but its replacement will be half-a-mile away in Shoreditch High Street when it opens in 2010.
