Glasgow East by-election: Labour suffers humiliating defeat as SNP celebrates

Labour has suffered a humiliating defeat in the Glasgow East by-election – a result that casts a huge shadow over the future of Gordon Brown.

'The Prime Minister faces a summer of turmoil after the Scottish National Party overturned a huge 13,507 majority to clinch the seat, formerly one of Labour's safest in the country.
Alex Salmond, the SNP leader, fulfilled his promise of creating a "political earthquake" by urging voters to punish the Government for failing to tackle the soaring cost of living.
The SNP won with a majority of 365 on a high turnout of around 42 per cent.
The swing was 22.54 per cent - making it the biggest by-election upset in Labour's Scottish heartlands since the loss of Glasgow Govan in 1988.
Mr Salmond said if the same swing was repeated at the next General Election, all but one Labour MPs in Scotland would lose their seat, including Gordon Brown. '
