No I'm not Dutch and before ya say it..........no.........I'm Spartacus :D
Hello to all , just thought I would introduce myself whilst scanning some of the threads in the forum.
I look forward to debating current affairs with the members here. I am a history and culture vulture and have a passion for political debates. Hope I can contribute to the issues raised in the threads here and will enjoy learning new stuff in the process.
regards Spartacus

Hi Spartacus & anyone else online
Big question which greater people than us have wrestled with...is the state of the world today an inevitable progression? I subscribe to the "great man" theory but it seems that far greater demographic forces are at work. Who, in the 1980's, could have predicted now?

Hello to you too Ikbland, I agree in part . If we look at say Martin Luther King and the black civil rights movement as an example. Yes he was/ is undoubtably its publicly acknowledged Icon and figurehead but he would have been nothing without the movement behind him. The mass of people whos efforts made his notoriety possible are mainly just unknown names to us today but their energy and contribution cannot be devalued just because we don't know their names. It's the same all throughout history ,imo.
In short I think if people create the movement the leading lights will find their way to it and become known as its great leaders etc etc so there is a very important role to be played by those who have the intent but maybe not all the answers. Both are reliant on the other and share equal merit despite who the history books will choose to remember.
And yes too to Mr Muses , I think these are very Orwellian times and agree with his quote,,,,,,,,,,,,,," In a time of deceit telling the truth is a revolutionary act. "
but
Another world is possible............. nothing is set in stone. As the Romans found out many moons ago. ;)

Howdy Albion 69. Each to their own but these are definately Big Brother days.
I don't think it matters whether we have David Davis or Dickie Davies ( the sports commentator ) fighting the good fight. The truth is that our politicians , whoever they may be , aren't in a position to change very much that affects the lives of many people in Britain today. They are simply out of their sphere of influence.
We are not on our own if it is any consolation :(

I didn't say they don't have any influence I said they don't have influence in many things that affect British people.
We already have a DNA data base and lengthy arrest without charge legislation and we have the highest CCTV count per capita in the world.
And who is to say what the politicians " want " is not really just what industry wants ?
A national DNA register would be useful to medical insurance companies , employers etc , how much of a difference to life in Britain ID cards would actually make is arguable . I mean how do we identify ourselves today without them ? Are we all walking around not knowing who anybody is ?
Everyone who is prone to a bit of mugging etc wears a hood so the cameras are virtually useless in identifying criminals and have had little impact on the violent crime statistics which remain high despite the army of cameras
Nah , the things I am talking about is the price of fuel which has a massive affect on industrialized nations. They don't have any real influence over how many immigrants can enter the country , Europe tells them how many can enter. The Americans tell them who they are to go to war with and so on. The employers follow the cheap labour markets and have destroyed totally British manufacturing industries. So they can't control unemployment rates etc etc
Another example is when George Soros took the Bank of England to the cleaners on " black Wednesday " they were powerless as he made billions out of currency trading causing panic in the city.
There are many more examples of the real lack of influence the politicians have in many of the things that affect everyday life in Britain.
But each to their own opinions :)
