Sir Ian Blair was forced to resign as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police yesterday in a swift political coup at the top of Scotland Yard.
Boris Johnson, the Conservative Mayor of London, asked Sir Ian to go, hours after taking control of London’s police authority. It is understood that he threatened Mr Blair with non-co-operation if he did not quit.

Good on Boris, Sir Ian has been nothing but a liability for the MET since 2005. A change of direction and fresh approach to policing London is required.

I'm not a big fan of Boris's politics but this is at least a good move. Blair should've resigned or been pushed out long ago thanks to his habit of covering up for his officers kiling innocent Brazilians.
But tete, Blair has driven London's crime down in almost all areas since being in charge so I'm not sure a change of direction in everyday policing is required.

WELL DONE BORIS JOHNSON,At last the Job Which the Home Secretary should
have done years ago either Bluncket/Clarke/ or the little Scots bloke who's name
for the minuet escapes me Boris Johnson did all on his own yesterday, and got
rid of a utterly useless article called Ian Blair.A man so vain and stupid that he
dared to go public and wonder outloud why the Soham Murders concerned the
public so much??.Also another side of his vanity was his office decoration bill
£ 220,000 pounds and that big Girls blouse was "still" complaining it wasn't up to
standard??.This is the man who after an innocent man had been tapped eleven
times in the Head managed to change his story no less than five times in front
of the Cameras, even his last press statement of the day (when he surely by
then must have known the game was up) still persisted in giving a lying press
release saying the man had jumped over the Ticket barrier and he was wearing
very bulky clothing (indicative of a suicide bomber). When in fact the poor dead
man was wearing a Levi Denim Jacket and T shirt.Ian Blair whatever kind of
success is claimed for time at the Met,most of it will be no doubt false just like your correspondence when the poor old Irish Bloke was shot "Dead" in the
Street for doing nothing more than carrying a Table Leg under his Arm.You
are rotten the structure you put in place is rotten, and the Met was becoming
rotten under your pathetic blind headline seeking so-called leadership.Thank
God and I must again thank Mr Boris Johnson for getting rid of your all
pervading "STINK".:)
