“Closed.” That’s what many of the signs on the front of the small shops downtown say. In a small town where people could actually make a living from these shops has become deserted. Why these shops would be closing? Because of large chain stores, such as Wal-Mart or Target.
Right now these stores aren’t making that big of a problem; but that’s only for now. In the bigger picture I think they will divide the classes. Smaller stores or even large chain stores will be bought out by even bigger chain stores. As a result these stores will employ many people. If you look at the jobs presented in these stores it is pretty much minimum wage or management. They’re pretty much eliminating the middle class. So now we’ll have a really large lower class and a small upper class and a divided nation.:(

Fully agree. And what's happening to communities? When you use to pop down to the local corner shop and chat with the shopkeeper and friends. The large chain stores are just money hungry, bringing cheap junk in from China. When your'e next in a store, just stand back and look at the store and it's stock. Do you get the feeling the products are inferior, cheap and crap.

Well, good news in Germany, the consumers fought back, and recently Walmart was forced to pull out of Germany entirely due to low sales. :D

15 applications for new stores were dropped, and the employees have all been re-employed by Lidl. Whilst not marvolous, pays proper wages and benefits to it's workers. Is cheap and affordable, mostly small and localy based, AND GERMAN!
