Race quotas 'needed to end divide in schools'

STATE schools should introduce ethnic quotas into admissions criteria to break down the extreme segregation of pupils along cultural and religious lines, the head of the Local Government Association said yesterday.

It was unacceptable that non-white pupils should form 90 per cent of the population of one school, when white pupils formed 90 per cent of a neighbouring school down the road.

As she collected her six-year-old daughter from the playground on a wet afternoon, one mother praised the school for its support to the local community.

Speaking outside the schoolgates, next to the neigbouring Catholic church the 30-year old council worker said. “The advantages of her going to a mainly Bangladeshi school are that she can speak her own language. But I suppose the disadvantage is that she doesn’t use English as much. I would like to see more of a mix, but this is a Bangladeshi area.”

A bangladeshi area? I thought everywhere in Britain was a British area?
