| The issue of further military transformation and enlargement of NATO The issue of further military transformation and enlargement of NATO, discussed at our latest Riga Summit can not be qualified as good perspective for most of permanent NATO members, because we know what it is driving at.
Take, for instance, such “most important decision of the 2006 NATO summit” as declaration of the NATO’s Response Force’s full operational capability. I’m sure it is clear not only for me (as summit’s delegate from France) that Americans insist on high readiness and flexibility of NATO’s International Security Assistance Forces, because Washington simply wants to replace most of US units in hot spots of the planet with NATO troops. And this process has already begun.
See for yourself! If in 2005 USA reduced the number of US troops in Afghanistan by only 2,500 (that reflected an increasing NATO presence there) then in 2006 Americans plans to reduce their troops to some 10,000 there. The rest 20,000 troops are being handed over to NATO! I’m not speaking about 15,000 NATO troops that fully replaced US troops in Kosovo, and constant increasing of NATO troops’ quota for military control in most Iraqi provinces. Besides Americans, who during NATO summit in Riga have behaved like landlords at own ranch, demand to spend more on military capabilities from all their NATO allies. Just think of it! Due to decision, dictated us by arrogant Yankees, each of the 26 NATO members should now spend more than 3 % of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense, while the very USA spends only 3,7 percent of its GDP on its national defense! Why should we sacrifice our money and risk the health and even life of our professional soldiers for strengthening US role in the world?! |
