In this current day in age, we as members of the European Union have always tried to support each other however our greatest flaw has always been our division due to our different country’s contradicting views. As we enter the last quarter of this decade and begin to look forward towards the next one I believe that we must examine our position on the geo-political stage. As we enter this next decade we stand to improve our position to that of one who can contend equally with both the United States of America and China. We may not be a nuclear power however as we continue to move forward I do not see that being one that has any influence on the balance of power on the geo-political stage. I will be the first to admit that the possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction do play a significant part in politics I also believe that all parties who are in possession of WMDs are also aware that to commence a nuclear attack on anyone would be to consign this whole planet to the grave. While it used to be believed that one could survive a nuclear winter by living in a fallout bunker, the current number of bombs make it so that once an attack and the counter attack were over with the planet would be uninhabitable for all except cockroaches for far longer that we could survive in a bunker. For this reason I would say that it is safe to assume that our lack of nuclear capability will not make a difference.
Many would argue that one of our other greatest weaknesses is the fact that we have such a small population in comparison to the US and China. Though we each as a separate countries have small populations are very small, we as a group are relatively close to their populations and always growing. For this reason I am a strong advocate of a stronger more united European Union. However to achieve this dream will require that we stop being so individually minded and start thinking of all of us as a whole. Such a change would allow us to contend on the geo-political stage as much more than just an extra.
As it stands the future of warfare will continue to be battles between men. Many would say that the future of war is going towards machines, but machines are just that, machines and machines can always be defeated, weather it be by an EMP or by a computer virus or some other form of techno warfare. Thus leading to the inevitable conclusion that battle will still be a human affair.
Economically we are continuing to grow and as a group can exert a decent amount of influence on the global market. This is yet another fact that can help us gain level footing on the geo-political stage. But the sole over riding fact here is that unless we as individuals decide to come to a consensus and find a way to come to the consensus quickly and on a regular basis we will always struggle to exert any influence over the powerhouses of China and the United States.
