| Reanimation of fascism in Estonia is an unpleasant revelation Reanimation of fascism in Estonia is an unpleasant revelation. There has been lots of argument on the matter recently. Still nobody tried to delve deeply into the reasons.
IMHO it’s lack of true democracy in the country, lack of “checks and balances” approbated in America. Economic gains in Estonia are weighty but bulk of national wealth is amassed by a handful of high-fliers. Needless to say such disparity results in visible social tensions in Estonia. There are few socially oriented political parties in Estonia. They are mainly so called Russian parties, which if they win in the nearing parliamentary elections could change the present state of things in Estonia.
So the ruling Estonian pols are just exploiting old trick. They need badly an outward enemy (“Russian occupants”) and they are trying to associate that enemy with the inner political opponents (Russian parties in the context).
This is actually a deception of Estonian people. Estonian authorities are manipulating their own people on the eve of elections. And it looks like many of Estonians are awakening to the fact. They say Estonians together with Russians are staying on guard of the Bronze Soldier in Tallinn.
I see it as an encouraging sign. Still European democracies should cultivate more democracy and that is more various parties representing interests of various strata of Estonian society. |
