Angry Butcher told chopping 'too noisy'

A butcher whose noisy meat cleaver kept tenants awake has been told he may have to close his shop.

Occupants of a flat above Keighley's Butchers, in Thackley, near Bradford, said the thud of the meat cleaver constituted a nuisance. Butcher Simon Keighley may now have to close after the landlord demanded he only chopped his meat during shop opening hours. Bradford Council said it had received a complaint about the noise.

Problem found

Paul Binks, environmental health manager for the authority, said: "We received a complaint from the landlord about the tenant upstairs being disturbed late at night and early in the morning by butchering work.
"We investigated and agreed that there was a problem and discussed it with the landlord and butcher. "We then planned to serve a noise abatement notice, requiring the butcher to abate the nuisance." The council said it had received a letter from Mr Keighley saying the landlord had asked him to work within normal shop hours. Mr Binks said: "He says he cannot continue on that basis so will have to leave the premises." Mr Keighley was not available for comment.
