Only four days after being told by our chief vet that the UK was free from foot and mouth, today a new reported case has been found 30 miles from the previous one.
BBC NEWS | UK | New foot-and-mouth case confirmed Quote:
The latest outbreak comes just days after the government declared Surrey to be foot-and-mouth free.
Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers' Union, said it was a "disaster" for British agriculture.
"The industry will be devastated that all the hard work it has put in to eradicate the outbreaks of 3 August and 8 August when the whole industry was completely locked up for a long time," he said.
Dr Reynolds, said the control zone was put in place swiftly because "containment and eradication of foot-and-mouth is our top priority".
She urged farmers to remain vigilant and report any suspicions.
The EU has halted plans to lift the export ban on livestock products from the area around the original outbreak. Prime Minister Gordon Brown is due to chair a meeting of the Cobra emergency committee at 1700 BST (1600 GMT). |
Linked to the Pirbright incident? Or a new event?I would say its a new event, as the incubation period for the virus had passed before we declared ourselves foot and mouth free.
