Soldier jailed over car rampage

A teenage soldier who shouted racist abuse as he deliberately drove at five Asian pedestrians has been jailed for five years.

Royal Engineer Ben Mawdsley, 19, of Luddenden Lane, near Halifax, thought his career as an Army driver was over when he was convicted of speeding.

Bradford Crown Court heard he went on a driving rampage hours after his licence was revoked by magistrates in June.

Mawdsley had earlier admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
At a court hearing in November he also admitted three counts of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm with intent, dangerous driving and causing actual bodily harm.

The court was told one of the pedestrians, Faisal Rashid, 18, suffered serious head injuries and was left blind in one eye when he was hit by Mawdsley's car on 11 June.

Two others were "knocked into the air" as his 4x4 vehicle mounted a pavement.

As Mawdsley drove around Halifax at speed he slashed himself with a knife, the court heard.

Andrew Dallas, prosecuting, said: "It appears he was upset by the outcome of a minor court case which concluded shortly before.

"However, there appears to be more to it than that. The victims were all of Asian origin.

"He shouted racist abuse at some of them as he tried to knock them over."

'Extremely remorseful'

Mr Dallas said Mawdsley's driving licence had been revoked at the previous hearing, after he was caught speeding at more than 100mph on the M62.
In mitigation, James Ward said his client was extremely remorseful for his actions.

Judge Jennifer Kershaw, QC, said: "This driving was deliberate, aggressive and dangerous. it was also prolonged."

After sentencing, Det Supt Chris Thompson said: "Mawdsley went on a rampage through the streets of Halifax using his vehicle as a weapon and subjecting the community to 40 minutes of sheer terror."

Anyone also noticed soon as 'Asians' were mentioned its posted all over the news like a rash, shame about those racist attacks on the white person who just get kicked under the carpet.
