EU-Pak relations: pitfalls

While looking back into the history of The European Union( formerly known as the European community) relations with the Pakistani nation, we rightly get the impression that there have been more three decades that the two sides- the EU and the people of Pakistan have been engaged in bilateral relations. The three generations agreement has been signed between the two sides. It goes without saying that economically the Union has made multifold participations in Pakistan. And yet politically , the European concerns in the Pakistani domestic and international policies have grown much largely after the era of 9/11.The recently held Elections in Pakistan have been monitored by the European observers. But strangely yet not surprisingly the EU's official statement regarding the restoration of the sacked judges, has not been in such tune and flavour as it was expected by the civil society in Pakistan. So far as the US war on terror is concerned, the EU- policy has been very much in toe with the US- policy stand. But the manner in which the Bush administration is excelling its pressure on the newly established Pakistani government in Islamabad that in case Islamabad does not fulfill the Washington' expectations, the Bush administration is of the view that the US aid must be reduced. It is the area where the EU must intervene and should use its leverage to convince the United sates that such US- policy option may not be good for the healthy survival of the relations between the United states and Pakistan.
