French contractors, employed by the Home Office to help to defend Britain's borders, have been responsible for a series of blunders that have allowed illegal immigrants to escape, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal.

Union officials claim that staff from Eamus Cork Security (ECS), a French company, lack the "necessary motivation" to carry out their role adequately and say they are employed as a cheap alternative to British security workers.
Last month, an ECS employee working at the French port of Dunkirk fell asleep at his post in the detention centre, allowing an illegal immigrant to walk out through an open door.
