Some illegal migrants should be given the right to work in the UK, according to a new campaign.

The newly launched strangers to Citizens campaign calls for an overhaul of government asylum policy to allow the country's army of illegal workers to start on the path to citizenship.

Under the proposed scheme, failed asylum seekers who have been in the UK for four years, have no criminal record and can speak English would be given a two-year work permit.

At the end of this, they would be given an assessment based on employer and community references, and if successful, granted the right to live and work in the UK permanently.................
