Can someone tell me when all the pubs are going out of business why the tight fisted government cant help them. The supermarkets are making millions. Why cant they up the price in the supermarket and lower prices in the pub. Reverse the tax if you like. The drunks buy cheap booze from supermarket as well as drinking in pubs . they can be drunk before they hit the pubs. They are going to get drunk whatever we do. don’t we have a priority to save jobs and the tradition of the public house. It saddens me and annoys me that the government just wont listen to logic, or accept what is happening to the trade.and have done nothing to help them. Can someone shine any more light on this.

why should the government help them? If not enough people want to go to pubs and pay money there, then why do they deserve to stay open?

Edit: ohh i see what you mean now, about the tax issue. Fair point really. Personally I am not too keen on tax levied in order to influence behaviour. However i can understand why it can be applied to alcohol in order to offset the cost of drinking to the health service, and to cover the costs of anti-social behaviour. Are we currently in a situation where the tax applied to draught alcohol is higher than that applied to supermarket alochol? Because that does not make a lot of sense to me really.

its like why should we help the little post office in a village.or the small local filling station thats so handy.its all down to taxes isnt it.some things need saving that a community relies on as well as the cultural and traditional aspects. the government would rather waste money on looking after everything not british. but thats another subject. people are been priced out of the pubs into supermarkets.they use to be busy. the tradition of a pub as a freindly social meeting place still stands in my town.a pub will close if nobody goes in.somethings need supporting.and it could be done if they wanted. i suppose these things dictate who we vote for.

    I love it.

The government brings out 24 hour drinking, that helps the pubs.

Then they tax them into bankruptcy, the smoking ban... So it's like the death penalty - a nice toast dinner before you are in the electric chair.

To be fair, the Government should reduce tax, and should get rid of that piss awful smoking ban.

The smoking ban (a stupid policy based on bad data) is certainly not a small factor here. what was worse is not long before the ban, the government forced publicans to buy very very expensive extraction fans to help clear the smoke from bars which are now useless.

i kind of agree with the smoking ban, only because i don't see why bar/ wiating staff etc should have to work in those conditions. I reckon they should be allowed separate smoking rooms though.

How do you do that. Glass partition?.

They taxed the alchohol so much.you can buy a bottle of wine nearly for the price of a glass in a pub. I wonder if they were aware or even cared about the consequences

.There actions are very PC.24000 jobs upto press gone.52 pubs a day closing. and were letting them in from abroad like it was open day.it seems wrong.

they are happy that the supermarkets makes alot of money at others peoples expense,(farmers for one.milk?) and sell cheap booze. So why sting the pub. we can all still booze if every pub in britain shuts.what are they achieving. just killing a very good industry.

i need somewhere to chill sometimes.if they continue to let the supermarkets sell cheaply they have to give the pubs a reduction.food is the only way they survive i think.they gave the big earners 50 percent. I thought that was acceptable in recession.

My original point was, i love the tradition and social aspect. love going on hols and visting country pubs. its peoples livelihoods. not sure if what i say is totally correct, or plausible.Would stand correcting or any other comments
