The recent spate of attacks by the naxalites/maoists (in India) has once again triggered a debate on how to deal with naxalism. There is no doubt that the law of the land should be obeyed. Any misgivings about the policies of the state have to be expressed in a democratic manner. It is not possible to correct the economic distortions in the society through violence, as the naxalites seem to believe. While the government of the day has to fulfill its constitutional obligation of preserving law and order, it would be prudent to take a more detached view of the entire matter.
