The under-representation of women, in particular BME women within UK government

Posted 11-02-2008 at 11:22 PM by Zara
Hello, I am interested in starting a general discussion on the under-representation of women, in particular BME women, within central and local government authorities. I would be grateful if people could post replies to one or more of the following questions. Q1. Do you think there are an under-representation of women, in particular BME women, within central and local government? Q2. Do you think it is important to have female representation within the more prominent roles of both central and local government? If yes, why do you think it is important for women to be represented within central and local government structures and affairs? If no, please explain why you think women do not need to be represented within central and local government affairs. Q3. Do you think female participation within central and local government makes a difference to political issues? Q4. What factors do you think contribute to the lack of female representation? Q5. What strategies do you think central and local government authorities should adopt to promote female representation and help BME women to proceed into more prominent roles? Q6. What do you think women in general can do to help themselves achieve more prominent roles within local government? Any views or general discussion around the topic would be much appreciated.

I'm not sure what we mean by BME women. I think this is something you need to explain rather than just assume we all know what you mean.

I think that one of the most important jobs within society is that of raising the next generation.

Those active on the issue of Women's rights tend to ignore the above and concentrate on careers etc.

The type of women who would tend to be involved in politics are not the type to campaign on behalf of Housewives and Mothers, therefore this very impotant section of society tends to be ignored.

Witness the comments made by Patricia Hewitt whoclaimed that "stay at home mothers represent a real problem".
