BNP accused of party invite to 18-year-olds

DOORSTEP canvassers from the extreme right-wing BNP are approaching teenagers on their 18th birthday and wishing them many happy returns - before trying to sign them up, an MP claims.

Broxbourne's Conservative parliamentarian Charles Walker said he had received letters suggesting British National Party volunteers in the borough of Broxbourne were calling on youngsters at home on the day they come of age in a bid to persuade them to join the party.

The BNP unsuccessfully contested two seats at the local elections in May, leaving Cllr Ramon Johns (Rosedale) as the party's sole local ward member.

Mr Walker said: "There's something pretty threatening and distasteful about this kind of campaigning and it's causing concern.

"The BNP might be working hard to present itself as warm and cuddly, but thankfully the overwhelming majority of Broxbourne's young people aren't fooled and see this political party for what it is."

And what is wrong with recruiting young political activists? What about the youth branches of the conservatives and Labour? Sounds like hipocrisy to me.
