BNP near-miss man has crack at by-election

THE British National Party has announced it will be fielding a candidate at the Charlestown by-election next Thursday.

Would-be BNP councillor Joseph Finnon pulled out a surprise result when he polled 24 per cent in Blackley last week, finishing second behind Labour incumbent Harold Lyons.

His result saw him poll more than the Tories and the Lib Dems combined, causing upset among councillors who said they feared it meant bad news for the area.

Council leader Sir Richard Leese described the party as having a history of being "nasty, violent scum."
