| London BNP Mayoral candidate, Councillor Richard Barnbrook, attended a debate organised by the Evening Standard newspaper entitled ‘Who Can Solve London’s Housing Crisis?’ on Tuesday 16th October. Several leading establishment figures were invited onto the top table, including New Labour Housing Minister Yvette Cooper. The event took on a BBC Question Time type format and over 200 people packed into the main hall of the Royal Society of Arts in Central London. Mrs Cooper stated that she considered London had a housing challenge rather than a crisis, which received jeers and sarcastic laughter from the audience. The contribution from Neale Coleman, Ken Livingstone’s representative from the GLA, was to say that London is a global city with no barriers to further expansion and unlimited mass immigration! He expressed great pleasure that tens of thousands of ‘affordable’ homes will be built in the near future, but who they are ear-marked for is anybody guess. Ex-Tory minister Steve Norris suggested constructing more high-density housing and giving developers more free range, ‘leading’ architect Sir Terry Farrell appeared to be living in complete cloud cuckoo-land and had no comprehension about the severity of the housing crisis affecting working-class people living in our overcrowded capital. The general consensus from the liberal panellists was that building on the greenbelt and the complete concreting over of our landscape, added to a huge population expansion, was a great bonus to our society and wellbeing. It was apparent from many decent people seated in the audience that they were not of the same opinion and many voiced their anger. ![]() Cllr Richard Barnbrook joined the debate by saying that he represented one of the poorest borough in London and that in the past 30 years no council houses or flats had been built in London and that a new policy coupled with funds was desperately needed to alleviate the housing crisis He added that the right-to-buy scheme had swallowed up large amounts of social housing and this problem had to be rectified. The BNP support the right-to-buy but the money made from this must be invested in new housing. Richard received a rapturous round of applause from the audience and glum faces from the panellists. One lady from Greenwich stood up and stated that over the next 13 years 3 million new homes are planned to be built nation-wide; of these at least 1.23 million are earmarked for new immigrants according to the government’s own figures. The panellists tried to evade this question and waffled at great length going completely off the subject. When Cllr Barnbrook asked for the question to be discussed and answered properly the Chairman, journalist Jonathan Freedland told him aloud to: "be quite, we’d heard enough from you!" in an obnoxious manner. So the evening came to a close, with the liberal luvies whisked away in their limousines, back to their palatial homes, while the ordinary poor Londoners have to still continue suffering. It must be noted that Yvette Copper and her husband Ed Ball – another Labour government minister – benefit from the Additional Claims & Allowances, meaning that their large North London house is classified as a ‘second home’ and entitling them to up to £44,000 to subsidise their joint mortgage. It was evident from all this that the BNP are leading the debate of this very important topic, effecting ordinary Londoners’ lives. It was apparent to all those who attended this debate that the people in control of our society are completely and utterly out of touch with the concerns and problems of ordinary people and are in no position to rectify the problems!
