| From this months' issue of 'Freedom': British jobs sacrificed on the altar of the global economy by Tina Wingfield SIX hundred workers in North Tyneside are to see their livelihoods shipped overseas as yet another global company ditches its highly skilled British workforce in pursuit of increased profits. Despite receiving £28million in re-location grants courtesy of the British taxpayer, the American multinational Atmel, is selling its microchip factory at Silverlink, North Tyneside, to a business park developer. The equipment, no longer needed as production is to be transferred to Atmel's other operations in America and France, will be sold to a company in Taiwan. The Atmel corporation announced its intention to sell the factory last year, and reassured workers that "no jobs would be lost". The sale was necessary, it said, to stay competitive and "business would continue as usual". Well, business may be continuing as usual for Atmel's greedy shareholders, with a bumper bonus of £60million to replenish the corporate trough, but life will deteriorate dramatically for the 600 British workers who have been unceremoniously dumped on the dole. Whilst they struggle to find work appropriate to their skills with the ever-decreasing number of manufacturing companies who have yet to bin Britain and join the global game, our 'champion of the workers' Labour Prime Minister Gordon Brown, has only empty sound bites to offer. 'British jobs for British workers' he bleats, yet because he is merely parroting a policy that his PR people advise is popular with the public, he takes no action to protect the British economy. The simple fact is that if we are to maintain our current standard of living, we cannot compete in the global market. We are not contesting a level playing field, as there will invariably be an economic imperative to base production outside of Britain: cheaper wages, better distribution networks, economies of scale, more appetizing government sweeteners and so on. The solution is equally simple. If we can't compete, then we should cease this futile sacrifice of the British workforce on the altar of competition and withdraw from the global game. Taking Britain out of the European Community, ring-fencing public money for British owned companies, and introducing tax incentives to promote the growth of British-based manufacturing, is the only way to protect our workforce and ensure that further job losses are avoided.
