Well the waits finally over and a big CONGRATULATIONS to those of you who have managed to get into the University of your choice!
Sorry if I have forgotten someone...
"The object of universities is not to make skilful lawyers, physicians or engineers. It is to make capable and cultivated human beings." John Stewart Mill
To which I'll add my own congratulations guys. Well done![]()
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
Well done guys![]()
Well done Dougie and Jacques![]()
Thanks guys. This seems like the appropriate place to announce that I may have to step down as a moderator in October, due to the high pressures of alcohol, women and (less importantly) a degree. I'll be staying on for the time being, and will give it a shot, but it is highly likely that I simply won't have enough time to dedicate to the forum. Many of you may remember The Legal Eagle who was a former moderator, and law student, who had to step down due to time constraint. I promise that I'll still be around, even if I don't have the time to continue as a mod.
Congrats guys.
I'll be in the same position in 2 years. Can't wait for my GCSE results!
So unproductive has conservatism been in producing a general conception of how a social order is maintained that its modern votaries, in trying to construct a theoretical foundation, invariably find themselves appealing almost exclusively to authors who regarded themselves as liberal. - F.A. Hayek

Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.74
Congratulations!
I must be butter because I'm on a roll.
I'm going to Farnborough (the 2nd best sixth form in the UK) lol! It look so good, I can't wait. Unfortunately for me, I yearn for education and learning. Sad!![]()
I hope to do medicine, so we are in similar higher academic circles. I hope you stick around. I certainly hope I will, when my time comes.
Exactly. I did a one year CPE conversion after a philosophy degree and found the jurisprudence fascinating. What is justice? What is a right? What's the proper relationship between rights and duties? It's fabulous stuff - no hard and fast answers but that's the whole point. You're entering a 2,500 year old rolling debate - wonderful.
Well done Dougie and Jacques enjoy it it will be probably the best time of your lives....................![]()
Advocates of capitalism believe : "The fortunate must not be restrained in the exercise of tyranny over the unfortunate"
Never used it... a better offer came along. Besides, I'm too lazy to be a lawyer and don't like working for other people. But I don't regret doing it. It took the ethics I did during the Philosophy BA and made me apply them to the real world in a tough-minded way. So it sort of squared the circle. I envy you having three years of it. Hope you manage to avoid too much debt!
