A court yesterday heard how the team leader at a Perthshire outdoor activities centre for school pupils trawled the internet for depraved images of children being subjected to sickening sexual abuse.
Matthew Faulds, who worked for PGL at the respected Dalguise House complex, downloaded more than five hours of child pornography featuring children as young as four. The 24-year-old, of Cheviot Crescent, Dundee, regularly worked with youngsters aged between seven and 17.Faulds sat in the dock with head bowed as Perth Sheriff Court heard how he scoured the internet for child pornography before storing video clips in hidden files with titles such as “13-year-old rape” and “pre-teen sex.” He admitted being in possession of indecent photos at Dalguise House—well known as the former holiday home of children’s author Beatrix Potter, between January and August this year.
During a subsequent police interview, Faulds told police he had “an issue” but that he took a job at Dalguise because he wanted to change his life. The offences only came to light after a shocked roommate who regularly borrowed the accused’s laptop stumbled across the files and contacted the authorities.
Depute fiscal Charmaine Cole said Faulds, who has now been suspended, was a key member of staff at Dalguise House. She said, “The organisation for which the accused worked provided trips and adventure holidays for children. The accused resided at the centre and shared a room with two other males.”
She added, “He became friends with one of the roommates and allowed him to use his computer to watch films which had been stored on it.” On one occasion Faulds’ roommate borrowed an external hard drive from him and plugged it into a computer in the bar at Dalguise House.
Ms Cole said, “The computer appeared to show hidden files labelled ‘stuff’ and ‘dls’. The roommate then opened the ‘dls’ file and several other file names such as ‘13-year-old rape’ and ‘14-year-old pre-teen sex’ were displayed.”
Ms Cole described how Faulds’ roommate contacted management at the centre and the police were summoned. The depute fiscal said, “When asked, the accused handed over the laptop and the external hard drive. He attended at Perth police station and initially denied that he had searched for any indecent images.”
She added, “Eventually, however, he asked the police what would happen if they did find child pornography and was told that would depend on what kind of material was found.”
At that stage Faulds came clean, telling detectives, “Right, I did. I was into child pornography. I know it was wrong. I thought I deleted it before I went to Dalguise.” He added, “I just wanted to change my life, I will admit that to you now.” The accused then admitted he had trawled the internet using search terms such as “underage 12-year-old”, “daddy” and “teen.”
Ms Cole said, “He told the police he had done so for his own sexual gratification and he felt he had an issue. Three hundred and twenty-eight video clips were found to contain pornographic material but only 23 showed the sexual abuse of children. In total there was in excess of five and a half hours of footage of children being subjected to sexual abuse. The children ranged in age from four to 15.”
When quizzed by detectives, Faulds denied he had “any sexual feelings” toward the children he worked with at Dalguise. Ms Cole said, “None of the images were of the children he worked with and all had been downloaded from the internet.”
Sheriff William Gilchrist deferred sentence until December 14 for reports and added Faulds’ name to the sex offenders’ register. A range of activities for children are offered at Dalguise House, including abseiling, fencing, forest trails and orienteering.
School children regularly visit for a day trips and residential courses. When contacted by The Courier a Perth and Kinross Council spokesman said the authority did not wish to comment on the case.

A paedophile kitchen fitter who was trapped by a police officer posing as a fellow pervert with a 12-year-old daughter has been spared jail.
Leslie Blanchard, 52, of Burnell Gate, Chelmsford, boasted "eight to 10-year-olds are best" when speaking online with the detective he thought was offering him his daughter for sex. After meeting the officer at a London pub, to discuss "Katie", detectives raided his home where they found condoms, children's clothing and underwear, as well as thousands of child porn images on his computer and phone.At Southwark Crown Court, Blanchard admitted arranging or facilitating a sexual offence against a child, and 11 counts relating to child pornography. The officer, using the name "Graham", made contact with Blanchard through an internet chat room, using the identity of another convicted paedophile. He claimed to be abusing his daughter and offered her to Blanchard, when they met at the pub, near Liverpool Street station, in March last year.
Afterwards Blanchard cancelled the arrangement, saying: "You looked so much like a copper when we met." But less than a month later, on April 5, he contacted "Graham" once again, saying: "I'm gutted I did not go through with it. I want her more than ever." He said he had been searching online for children's thongs but: "You can't get them anywhere." He was arrested the following day.
In mitigation, Marion Smullen said Blanchard had committed his offences when he was in "the most difficult period of his life" following a divorce. She said that his text message in March showed that he was a fantasist who would not have gone through with the eventual arrangement.
He was spared jail by Judge Anthony Pitts who said he could not be sure that Blanchard would have gone through with the attack, and no child was in danger because "Katie" was fictional.
Instead he handed out a 36 month community order with a five year sexual offences prevention order, taking into account 249 days he had spent either in custody or tagged since his arrest.

Man will face court on sex assult and child porn charges

A man accused of sexually assaulting two boys and possessing hundreds of indecent images of children has been sent to crown court.
Matthew Butcher, aged 34, face Plymouth magistrates to answer two charges of indecent assault and one of possessing nearly 600 indecent images. Butcher, of Wilton Street, Stoke, also faces eight further charges of making indecent photographs. All the offences are said to have happened in 2007 and 2008. He entered 'no plea' to all matters.Lucy Ray, prosecuting, said: "The defendant allegedly assaulted two young boys and had images on his computer." She added that still images and movies seized ranged in seriousness from Level 1 to Level 4. There were no Level 5 images, the most serious category. Plymouth magistrates released Butcher on unconditional bail until he appears at Plymouth Crown Court on January 25.

Man pleads guilty to possessing vile child porn

Vile child pornography labelled with twisted file names were found on a Lingfield man's computer.
Keane Ingram, of Grove Road, entered guilty pleas to 20 counts of making indecent images of children at a court hearing on October 1. Prosecuting Shika Varma told Guildford Crown Court that two counts of the images concerned were in the most vile category, category five. The rest were spread across all the remaining categories with three each in grades three and four, two in category two and 10 counts in section one, the court heard.It was also told that some of the images seized by police were labelled on the computer with twisted file names which included references to sex acts and involved children under 10.
Judge Christopher Critchlow postponed sentencing Ingram until November 13 to allow for pre-sentence and psychological reports to be prepared. However, the judge warned Ingram that he could face jail. He said: "The fact that I am adjourned sentencing and releasing you on bail is no indication of what the sentence may be." Ingram, who was of previous good character, was ordered to sign the sex offenders' register.

A convicted paedophile was today jailed for neglecting a newborn baby by failing to seek medical aid for the child's injuries.
Paul Henman, 21, allowed the three-week-old girl to suffer four broken ribs and a damaged ankle in his care. He even took her to a party, where she constantly screamed in agony. Guests insisted he take her to doctors, which he did not do until 9pm the next day. He admitted he was sickened by the sound of the baby's broken back but had done nothing.The judge at Snaresbrook crown court said the baby had been subjected to an "extremely serious assault" and was neglected between 6 and 16 March last year. Henman, of Bow, and partner Rachel Carl, 20, of Poplar, were last month cleared of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Henman, who had previously been jailed for sex acts with a teenage girl, admitted child cruelty and was jailed for a year. Carl was acquitted of the same charge.
Today's sentencing came on the anniversary of the death of Baby P. Balloons and toys were left at a vigil at the north London grave of the 17-month-old boy, who died of injuries inflicted by his mother's boyfriend two years ago.

A man who downloaded more than 17,000 indecent pictures of youngsters being abused has been jailed for 16 months.
It is the second time James Banacek (25) has been locked up for viewing and storing child pornography on his computer. On Thursday, Leicester Crown Court was told he began amassing a vast collection of sickening images following his release from his last sentence, despite being on a sex offenders rehabilitation course.Victoria Rose, prosecuting, said Banacek was on an extended licence period and subject to risk assessment by a public protection management team. When officers inspected his computer in February last year, at his then home in Cosby, they found the indecent images, including children as young as five being abused.
Banacek pleaded guilty to 10 counts of making indecent images and movies across the range of five categories of seriousness, since August 2006. The charges related to 60 images and 19 movies of the most serious kind, at level five.
There were 558 images and 141 movies at level four, 508 images and 61 movies at level three, 94 pictures and 31 movies at level two as well as 5,757 images and 88 movies at level one. Ms Rose said Banacek was estimated to have downloaded in excess of 17,000 images at level one. She said that not everything was inspected on Banacek's computer and CDs.
The estimate was based on a sample, and that 32% of all the material checked consisting of child pornography. Ms Rose said the website from which he obtained the images has been shut down. In 2005, Banacek was jailed for 10 months, with a three-year extended licence period, for downloading, possessing and distributing illegal images of children.
Passing sentence, Judge Simon Hammond said: "It's terribly serious. The defendant had completed a sex offenders prevention course and it's a tragedy it didn't work." The judge said the maximum sentence after a trial would have been two years and he was giving a discount for the guilty pleas.
Banacek will be on a sex offenders register for ten years and was made the subject of a series of "stringent" restrictions under a Sexual Offences Prevention Order, to protect the public.
Rosa Dean, defending, said: "When on the course he was taught about victim empathy and reduced his viewing, but once the course finished he put the awareness of the victims to one side. It was inevitable he was going to be caught because of the checks he was subjected to. He's socially isolated and a pathetic figure. He knows he needs help and needs to cease using the internet. He's surprised at the number of level four and five images in his possession, which he transferred to CDs. He's disgusted with himself. If he doesn't stop he will bring even more shame on his family."

A pervert who abducted a 13-year-old girl and had sex with her has been jailed.
Ansar Hussain had the girl in his car when he was stopped by Derby police in London Road, on October 7, after the teenager's grandmother reported her missing. They discovered a small amount of cannabis in the car and tests on the girl's underwear found Hussain's DNA. He initially denied he had slept with the girl, but later pleaded guilty to abduction, sexual activity with a child and possession of a controlled drug.Sentencing Hussain, Judge David Pugsley, who also banned him from working with children for life and placed him on the sex offenders' register, also for life, said: "If you come back for any sex offence you will probably be at risk from being locked up for a very long time. I appreciate this is a case where there is not a big age gap, but she was a young girl and you knew she was a young girl."
Jonathan James, prosecuting, told Derby Crown Court how Hussain, 24, of Almond Street, Normanton, had previously been spoken to by the police, who had been contacted by the girl's grandmother.
Mr James said: "The girl's grandmother was very concerned she (the girl) was getting into drugs and having sex. She (the grandmother) called the police on September 13 and the defendant was spoken to by officers, who told him she was under the age of consent. On October 7, the police had another call from the grandmother. The police went out and stopped the defendant in London Road. He was in the driver's seat and the girl was in the passenger seat."
Questioned by police, Hussain denied he had been in sexual contact with the girl, now 14, but later admitted they had had sex. Alwyn Jones, in mitigation, said the girl had approached Hussain in the city and told him she was over the age of 16.
Mr Jones spoke of Hussain's "naivety". He said: "The grandmother said the girl's behaviour had been unruly. She had been going missing and mixing with the wrong crowd. This is his first taste of custody and it has been a lesson for him." The judge sentenced Hussain to two years and eight months for sexual activity with a child, two years for abduction and three months for the drug charge. All will run concurrently.

A 55 year old man who downloaded pornographic pictures of children has been spared a prison sentence, so he can receive treatment.
Police found 235 indecent images of children on a computer, floppy discs, CDs and a memory stick belonging to Raymond Bennett. Judge Robert Brown told the Chaddesden man he deserved to be sent to prison but that would mean he would not receive the treatment he needed.Giving Bennett a community order, with a three-year supervision requirement, Judge Brown said: "You are less of a risk in society when you've been treated. Anything other than a three-year community order will not permit the probation service to have you in their care for long enough to complete the programme in full."
Bennett will have to attend a programme for sexual offenders. A report by the probation service said Bennett posed "a high risk of harm to children". Derby Crown Court heard that police seized Bennett's computer after arresting him on October 2 last year on an unrelated matter for which he was later released without charge.
Dominic Shelley, prosecuting, said police found 186 images of the lowest indecency rating; 16 of category two; six of category three and 27 of category four. The highest rating is category five.
Keith Raynor, in mitigation, said Bennett had been honest with the probation service and stated that his motivation had been sexual. Bennett, of Moray Walk, admitted seven charges of possessing indecent photographs of children. He was ordered to do 150 hours' unpaid work, sign the sexual offenders' register and comply with a prevention order, which includes not going within 50m of a school or nursery or working with children.

Jurors have found a rock musician guilty of possessing more than 1,500 child pornography images.
Matthew Paton, 34, was yesterday (Friday, 29 April) convicted of five charges of possessing incident photographs of a child at Chelmsford Crown Court. The jury cleared Paton on eight other charges of making an indecent photograph of a child between February and November 1999.Paton, of Farmadine Court, Saffron Walden, was sentenced to six months imprisonment and must remain on licence for a further period of two and a half years. He was also made to sign on the Sex Offenders Register indefinitely and an order was made disqualifying him from working with children.
Judge Christopher Ball QC told Paton: "Having heard the evidence in the trial, I have no doubt whatsoever you were fully aware these images were in your possession. I have to make it plain to those who might be tempted to take a similar course that the public approach to this sort of conduct is one of abhorrence. It is criminal and will attract punishment."
The court heard the images were found following a raid at the defendant's home in June 2003, when police seized and examined computer equipment and a rucksack containing floppy discs.
Of the total of 1,505 images found in Paton's possession, 205 were of the level one category, 147 were level two, 944 were level three, 196 were level four, and five were level five, the most serious category.
Defence counsel John McGhee said at the time Paton's personal life was chaotic and in a mess because of drug use and alcohol use. Due to his naivety his home was used as an "open house". He was taking steps to put his life in order.

I believe that through awareness these crimes can be reduced. On quite a few occasions parents are quoted as saying, they wish they had known more about the mans past who abused there children. I believe that the sex offenders register should be made public to every body.

Then we get what's called 'vigilantes'. I think schools and daycares should have limited access to it, as in by putting a person's information in, it comes up with a 'yes' or 'no', but no specifics about them. Maybe even a nanny licensing scheme if there isn't one already, optional of course.

At least there is no risk of re-offending this way.

If this level of punishment were implemented in the UK, I would be very curious to see exactly how it affected crime rates.

The reason I ask is because I suspect we're far more conditioned by social/cultural mores than by fact in respect of the alleged psychological damage caused to children. The one thing I'd use as evidence to support that assumption is how the age of consent (see the recent thread http://www.politic.co.uk/government-...le-checks.html) varies wildly around the world; what can be a perfectly legal relationship in one country can be regarded as paedophilia in another.

Guess I'd better put a disclaimer that I'm simply playing devil's advocate here, not that I approve of either!

In response I too shall tread carefully, as this is a terribly delicate subject!

My personal opinion, is that there should be different "scales of paedophilia" - rather than a simple black/white definition.

A 65 year old man looking at pictures of 3 year old children being raped, is VERY different to a 17 year old boy having sex with his 14 year old girlfriend....

It´s an interesting and complicated point I guess.

I also read something recently which is perhaps equally as though provoking. It questioned how well we class the severity difference between those who actualy groom with the intention of physical contact (and perhaps achieve it) and those who have looked at images online.

It compared the latter to someone looking at images of the 9/11 attacks and labelling them as a "terrorist".

I think the paedophile issue arises with that of informed consent to a greater degree involving a figure (adult) who can be seen as one of authority abusing that position to make a child perform sexually either without knowing the nature of the act or in some way out of fear or in any way colluding with that act , for example providing a market for pictures of it.

OK, a hypothetical question. Let's say you lived in either the Vatican City or Zimbabwe, both of which have a legal age of consent for girls of 12. A man approaches such a girl, and with her consent takes a series of pornographic pictures of her for his own "enjoyment". Totally legal, no-one bats an eyelid. Now bring those same people to the UK and they do exactly the same thing, what's different except this time it's totally illegal, the man concerned would be subject to imprisonment and perhaps other stringent restraints on being released and the girl might be put in care?

Now, other than in the UK there's a law which has different ages written in to it to the law in either the Vatican or Zimbabwe, why should there be any difference in the way we view what's being done once an arbitrary line drawn on a map is crossed, other than on a purely cultural basis of distaste? I'm curious to know what others think.

Paedophilia is any sexual contact, forced or non-forced, between an adult and a child.

Paedophiles are near the bottom of the food chain in prison, so I would require that this person be made to wear a sign, while imprisoned for life, and set loose in the general population, telling what his crime is. The other inmates will take care of the rest.

Pretty sure that paedophilia actually means 'being sexually attracted to children', or something along those lines.

It is a cultural thing with regard to sexual ages etc, BUT this country has a different set of values and laws and those values and laws must be respected and upheld.

I wouldn't seek to disarm America on my visits and force them to my laws, so I would not expect the laws here to be broken because it was ok somewhere else.

On a very trivial note I remember being searched on a school trip to France to make sure that we were not bringing flick knives back.

I don't seek to inflict my views on the Vatican, but they must show the same respect to me regardless of disagreement

Contentious I know but these people are human you know, granted ones who are very ill; there is a reason why quite a few abusers were themselves abused. The sort of ill thought-out policy which results as a reaction to the hysteria which causes paediatricians to be fire bombed, is not the way to protect innocent children!

Your right Uncon, I guess the only debate lies with the harm factor which is hard to measure. Either way it´s a violation..

As humans we have had this tendency to watch some rather horrible things for a long time: Public hangings, lions Vs man etc and as Uncon says, most spectators would not dream of acting out what they see. They don´t even have to be "turned on" to look at it. Sometimes the shock factor must be the appeal.

Thats it - and its not just sex crimes, drug offences also have equally erratic levels of punishment dependant on where you are in the world.

I think that the smaller the world gets, the bigger the problem will be in this sense, as we try to "push" our culture onto others, because we are convinced that our belief system is "the best."

I do think that, of course I do and it is possible of course for someone who is sexually attracted to children to ignore the impulses and seek help before ruining another life. However if we are to ever truly break the cycle and protect our children then I think we need to concentrate on what the causes are and how to treat the problem.

What would you do if you found out that your partner He/She was a Paedophile.

I Just do not understand how someone could stay with there partner knowing full well that they are a paedophile.

Well obviously I'd like to think I would put the needs of my child ahead of my own or my partners, but in reality the partners of abusers are often vunerable and abused themselves.

All parents or guardians of young children should be informed of a Paedophile or paedophiles living in there area. If the local government won't bring this to the parents then we should,and we can start right now,here on this forum. The internet will bring parents here to view these disgusting Bas--rds.
