Why do you not use/only occasionally use the forum ChatBox facility?

This is a discussion on Why do you not use/only occasionally use the forum ChatBox facility? within the Coffee Room forums, part of the The House of Commons category; I'm interested in finding out more about the ChatBox facility we introduced some months ago, or perhaps more to the ...

Why do you not use/only occasionally use the forum ChatBox facility?

I'm interested in finding out more about the ChatBox facility we introduced some months ago, or perhaps more to the point, why some members don't use it.

We seem to have a hardcore of a relatively few regular users with a number of other people who'll occasionally join in a chat, but a significant majority of forum members have never been spotted there. Are you all shy; 'cos I can't believe that you've got nothing to say, especially if some of your posts are anything to go by

If you could give an indication of what puts you off from using ChatBox in the poll, I'd appreciate it - the questions are multiple choice and your vote is private.

Obviously if anyone would like to expand on their thoughts, or have something to say about why you do use ChatBox, please post a message and share it with us!

I generally perceive Chatbox as a a facility for a small group who seem to know each other quite well, rather in the way of neighbours talking over the fence. On a number of occasions I would have felt embarrassed to intrude on quite personal conversational sequences which might have been better had by personal messaging.

On another forum I once spent some time on, you had to log in to the chat room, so anyone who was reading the conversational exchanges was readily identifiable and listed as being on line in the chat room. 'Lurking' wasn't possible and I much preferred that in what is an immediate response interactive exchange.

I don't use it. I looked on line for a forum, a forum is what I found. That'll suit me. I don't use emotes or bad language, either.

Well, as you are talking it up, I have looked in from time to time and I would say puerile is the word, not awesome.

I hate people who destroy lives through some twisted manner. But by and large, I'm not a hater.
I vote for the BNP. And usually people speaking against them, speak against me and my kin. As we are of one goal. But that aside, I dont hate those who oppose. They just see things differently. And sometimes that can be a blessing.
So no, I don't hate you.

I don't tend to use the chatbox facility here ( I have elswhere ) simply because it tends to be very intimate ..............well at least when I have looked at it it has................people talking about important personal issues........ya just feel like you would spoil a moment by barging in .......as I would if Uncom was chatting to Major Sinic.....

Having said that............I think they are a plus not a minus to a forum........each to their own

The presence of a chatbox doesn't really encourage people to debate.

That was a bit of a concern when it was first started, but in fact it's not been the case at all. Topics which should be discussed in the forum itself are discouraged other than the odd comment and small talk is far more the order of the day.

I turned it off because I don't like the way it makes the forum jump each time it refreshes. I then forgot it existed. Thanks for the reminder.

Re: Why do you not use/only occasionally use the forum ChatBox facility?

    Hi,

couldn't it be put on a tab so that it is NOT at the top requiring scrolling past - I find posting there tedious and it seems best suited to the sad with nothing better to do and no friends to talk to - the thread needs constant following in coversation or one misses responses or comments that link conversation.

A Forum is what it says on the label - where does it say diluted by a sort of Messenger - why not take it off and let them plat twitter which chatbox is a poor and pale imitation of.

    Regards,
    Greg L-W.

You can adjust the size of, or close the ChatBox window simply by clicking on the little -/+ symbols or ^ arrow in the top right hand corner. It's been put at the top of every page by popular demand though Greg.

As one of CBs mainstays I find this post purposely provocative. It's good to have recourse to idle chit chat within the community with like minded individuals. A place with an emphasis on less strenuous forms of communication. I understand that it would not serve your purpose of denigrating an insignificant political party as the usually fast moving nature of posting on CB would cause your accusatory contributions of venality within UKIP to be lost much quicker - much better to post in the main forum where the posts are preserved for posterity often ignored mind you and merely considered as 'yet another attack' by Greg on UKIP ... yawn ... and you insinuate those posting on CB lack friends!!!

As for Twitter... Created for over zealous ego maniacs who feel the needs to validate each and every action they undertake by broadcasting it to the world... or should I say their 'followers'.

POPULAR demand? So far 5 postings on the poll in 12 days - doesn't sound wildly popular to me!

    Hi,

can you identify a single attack on UKIP by me - I have supported the party and its aims for well over a dozen years.

I doubt you can find a single attack on UKIP by me anywhere on the internet.

Perhaps I don't use CB because there are so few like minded people on the Forum and chatting to people who agree is about as much fun as kissing your sister!

One aspect of being like minded is accuracy - as in your simplistic misunderstanding of my stance with regard to EUkip and idiots who assume that because one is opposed to Zionism one is by some leap of credibility bizarrely anti Jewish - I find little like minded amongst people with such fantasies.

There are 35 threads by you in the UKIP section, all attacking the party (or, 'EUkip', you seem to think that this makes sense despite the fact it is a running joke to most people).

What was the point of the sister remark?

    Hi,

not ONE attacks UKIP as you have shown.

That EUkip is a joke - all be it a sick joke is not in dispute.

Like the comment about 'sister' it seems the point has rather left you standing - all be it fairly clear.

You will note that I inferred that I had no interest in conversation of CB with like minded people - I found it about as interesting as kissing one's sister - ie not remotely!

    Hi,

    when asked:
Why do you not use/only occasionally use the forum ChatBox facility?
I excercised the opportunity to reply as have you.

I appreciate there are many areas of restriction of freedom of speech on this Forum - I realise that as with communism everyone is equal and just as with communism apparatchiks of the system are more equal than others and not bound by the same rules.

What actually is your point in that clearly you are ecercising what rights are granted you (well your license) to speak freely - and I and others respond.

In whaty way are you expected to excercise silence as you imply?

    Regards,
    Greg L-W.
