    Useless fact of the day

Did you know that there's over 10,000 cubic kilometres of fresh water in the world's man-made reservoirs, more than 5 times the volume of all the earth's rivers put together? Also, because over 80% of these reservoirs are in the northern hemisphere they've created a slight imbalance to the earth's rotation, the uneven weight distribution causing it to speed up by 8 millionths of a second a day over the last 70 years.

Didn't you just want to know that!

    Hi,

yet it is claimed that The Amazon River system contains 28% of the world's fresh water.

    Two irreconcilable facts!!!

It doesn't. It might contain 28% of all the river water in the world, but that's a very different thing.

    Hi,

that's not what they say in Brazil!!

There is so much red mud from the Rio Amazonas that it can be seen 100miles out to sea off the coast of Belem.

The silt in the Amazonas takes 5-7 miles to mix in with the silt free Rio Negro below Manaus.

Iguassu is the biggest flow of water over a waterfall in the world (& it is spectacular) so also are Angel Falls Venezuela but that is for height!

    Regards,
    Greg L-W.

I guess they're a bit biased on that one

So I understand, and have seen from aerial photography.

I've seen Iguassu and I would agree that it is spectacular; mind you, so are the Victoria Falls in full flood. I've not seen Angel Falls yet other than on TV, but you wouldn't catch me base jumping from the top of them like some do!

    Hi,

I was lucky I did one of the greats The Blue Train Cape Town to Victoria, I've swum in the utterly spectacular and scarey rock pool right on the edge - I was young enought to be that 'challenged'!

Done free fall but never base jumped, watched them at Angel & Trondheim! - abseiled off the Avon/Clifton bridge when I was about 14/15!! If you aren't mad then you stand no chance!

    Here's a semi-useless semi-fact of the day

Thats the UK's internet useage in image form. Some might not be readable, the one in front of Google is flickr, youtube and ebay above and to the left, top left is Amazon with blight of modern society Facebook on the far right. Taken from The Virtual Revolution on BBC.

Kind of useless eh? But interesting...the programme uses this to suggest the internet, supposedly the home of innovation and freedom, is actually more regimented than we like to think

EDIT: If you look really really closely there is a very small ball in the top right, thats politicspoliticalforum.com. No not really

There are 86,400 seconds in a day.
I like to sleep for at least 26,400 of them.

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.
I wonder why the things that should be so simple, so natural... like loving someone and letting them see into your heart... should require so much courage?

Re: Useless fact of the day

Now we have even less time to sleep

    from Yahoo News:

The massive 8.8 earthquake that struck Chile may have changed the entire Earth's rotation and shortened the length of days on our planet, a NASA scientist said Monday.
The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

I suppose 1.26 milliseconds counts. More earthquakes might add to it? What do I know?
