The SPLM, which is trying to hide its current crisis, will sooner or later witness huge splits. And if we want to be accurate, we shall mention the fact the reasons of this expected split date back to the times of war.
The signs of this split erupted clearly during the signing of the Naivasha Peace Agreement 2005 when the current SPLM leader Salva Kiir Mayardit and a number of his commanders publicly criticized the stance of the late SPLM leader, Dr. Johan Garang, toward the issue of unity of Sudan.
Salva Kiir and his commanders wanted the SPLM to concentrate on the South Sudan alone with a view of establishment of their independent state while the then SPLM leader Dr. John Garang was looking forward to rule the entire Sudan in order to make drastic change in the ideological and political shape of Sudan and establish what he called the new Sudan.
These facts reflect that the split is not new and that the late Dr. Garang was successful in containing the dispute his successors failed to handle.
The SPLM decision to withdraw Yassir Arman from the presidential election contest is undisputed evidence that the SPLM is suffering from internal disputes.
Obviously, the SPLM decision to boycott the elections in north Sudan was a reaction to some SPLM members stance protesting the withdrawal of Arman from the presidential elections.
No doubt that, the current disputes will have negative impact on the SPLM unity in the future
