Good Letter from Bill & Anne WOODHOUSE in today's TELEGRAPH.

SIR – Your leading article (February 27) notes that malcontent Tory MPs are "torn between Schadenfreude and panic" about their party's single-digit poll lead.

As a former Conservative branch chairman, I know that MPs are told by their grass-root supporters – with considerable justification – that the leadership is not pursuing Conservative policies. The return of grammar schools is ruled out. Council tax, the only tax with no relevance to the ability to pay, will at best be frozen for only a year or two.

And the most important issue – that of handing over our right to be self-governed to unaccountable EU apparatchiks – is no longer on the agenda.

    Why should anyone vote Conservative?

Mind you, did Margaret Thatcher or John Major establish any new grammar schools?

No change there, then. Sad but true.
