| David Davis: Where does Gordon Brown stand on immigration? Shadow Home Secretary, David Davis, has written to Gordon Brown asking him to formally and publicly state his position on immigration. A full copy of the letter is below: Dear Gordon, IMMIGRATION In light of your pledge this week to prioritise British workers for British jobs, I am writing to urge you to state your position on immigration formally and publicly. As Chancellor you are already partly responsible for the 'open doors' immigration policy implemented by this Government. This approach has failed to confront today's issues because it has allowed economic expediency to override sound social policy. At its current levels, immigration now adds one per cent to the population every two years. We need to build two hundred new houses a day to meet its demands. And inadequately funded councils are cutting other services as a result of the influx, describing it as a 'financial crisis'. This approach to immigration has also been a way for the Treasury to avoid difficult economic questions. These are starting to become more urgent and cannot be pushed aside. As you noted in your speech to the GMB union, it has also had a drastic side effect on the British workforce, as the scope for capital labour replacement without immigrants is now increasingly limited. With 1 million economically inactive under 25 years olds and a severe lack of skills based training, David Frost of the British Chamber of Commerce has lamented that: "Immigration is not solving today's problems but actually postpones them". You have said nothing publicly as to how you would address these problems for which you are largely responsible, when you become Prime Minister. I urge you to give serious consideration to two Conservative proposals. Firstly, tackle illegal immigration through enforcing existing law and creating a border police force trained to protect our borders and deal with those who over-stay. Secondly, manage legal migration through an annual limit and place the immigration debate within a wider demographic policy. Without these in place, the problems created by uncontrolled immigration will remain. Given the widespread interest in this matter, I am making this letter publicly available."
