Crime Mapping gimmick or good idea ?

David Cameron, David Davis and Boris Johnson have launched plans to introduce crime mapping to the UK and give people much more information about the level of crime in their neighbourhoods.
Our policy paper, 'Giving the public a crime map', lays out plans to make every police force release crime statistics on a monthly basis and publish them in map form.
The information available from crime mapping allows local people to assess crime levels in their area and hold the police to account.
David Cameron said, "Crime mapping has revolutionised the way they fight crime across American cities - and it can do the same here."
Our proposals also include quarterly 'Beat Meetings' in each neighbourhood, to give residents the opportunity to quiz police officers on what's being done to tackle crime.

Introducing crime mapping to the UK - News Story - Conservative Party

Well at first glance it looks a bit gimmicky but the more information we the public get the better if there is a crime wave of one particular type that continuous month after month we know the Police are not doing their job properly and can hold them to account . We could also see if certain crimes are just displaced to new areas following Police initiatives it would also prove beneficial to be able to talk to a beat Policeman in our area to find out what recent issues have arisen and what the Police are doing about them and to report problems ..... a good idea ?
