Australia counts deadly fire toll, BBC News, Monday, 9 February 2009
The number of deaths from bushfires that have already claimed 170 lives in the Australian state of Victoria is likely to rise, officials have warned.
Police believe some of the fires were started deliberately - actions which Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said amounted to "mass murder".
Survivors have recounted how they fled walls of flames. Some people died in their cars trying to escape the fires.
Some rural towns have been completely destroyed.
Police have sealed off a number of sites, including the devastated small town of Maryville, as possible crime scenes.
Victoria State Premier John Brumby said: "We have had whole communities just completely wiped out, completely obliterated, by what people would describe as literally a fireball that just came over the hills and devoured everything before them.
"It's the largest natural disaster in our state's history and Australia's history."
Scorching temperatures, drought, tinder-dry bush and constantly-changing wind directions on Saturday helped fan the blazes, affecting an area of some 3,000 sq km (1,200 sq miles).
Another royal disaster - this time in Australia - 170 deaths in bush fires which a good president of an Australian republic should have prevented.
This story merits attention because human lives have been lost which could have been saved and it is important to save lives wherever possible.
There is an absolutely urgent need to explain to the world political community how the failure of Queen Elizabeth as head of state is leading to one disaster after another and this news story is simply the latest disaster for which she as head of state is responsible.
If people can be educated about the failure of the Queen, as I am trying to do here and in my website, then political action can be taken to have revolutions in countries like Australia (and Scotland where I stay) to change these Windsor realm countries into republics which can then elect a competent president as head of state who can then insist on action to save lives.
The Queen is to blame for these fire deaths. Why?
So people should fear that the Queen, Prince Charles and the royalists, until they are stopped, are going to cause many more deaths of innocent people.
- The Queen allowed a poor Australian Prime Minster - Rudd who did not prevent the bush-fire deaths.
- The Queen allowed the usual suppression of Rudd's critics
- The Queen allowed poor building regulations and/or poor enforcement of regulations which should be making houses and their immediate location fire-proof. Instead, trees and other tinder have been allowed too close to houses, houses built which burn too easily and so on
- The Queen allowed arsonists to roam the country free the same as scum are allowed to roam free here in Scotland and other countries the Queen rules.
The Australian armed forces shouldn't fear the Queen though - they should enforce a ban on the royal family visiting Australia and arrest the Queen's Governor General as a first step towards an Australian republic.

What utter rubbish to blame the Queen for these terrible fires! The ultimate in passing the buck!
Natural bush fires are endemic in large parts of Australia, and communities which build largely wooden houses in forested areas have only themselves to blame, along with the local authorities who sanctioned the developments.
Talk about not wanting to take responsibility for one's own actions!

I am sorry but all your thread does is screams moronic tendencies.
The fires can be blamed on the people who started them and the weather that caused it. How you can blame the Queen is beyond me.
This is possibly the most stupidest thing I have ever had the misfortune to read.
What a load of rubbish, the monarchy (not necessarily the Queen personally who seems like a very nice old lady) are culpable by their very existence for many things (an institutional block to democracy for a start), however I fail to see how she can be blamed for an act of God/arson. Criticise Rudd all you like for mishandling the situation and I've heard Australians say he should have sent the army in straight away and there'd be more of them if it weren't for Iraq/Afgahnistan, but to blame the Queen ridiculous!

Er, is this some sort of bad taste joke? The Queen "allowed" this or that, is this guy for real?

Local authorities should not have been ALLOWED to sanction developments of wooden houses in forested areas threatened by bush-fires without a minimum fire-break clearing surrounding the house and other measures such as appropriate fire-fighting equipment and water supply available.
Also having trees and bushes in town dwellers' home gardens or along streets is also asking for trouble. Particularly if the town does not have overwhelming fire-fighting capabilities. Again rules need to be imposed to stop fires spreading from a bush fire into a built up area.
The state and the federal government right up to prime minister should take responsibility and impose regional building regulations and insist that local authorities have a duty to enforce such regulations.
Legislation should have been passed or failing that the central government should have declared a state of emergency.
Rudd has been PM for more than a year and he has done nothing.
The Queen as head of state takes the blame for the failures of any Prime Minister running her state.
I don't blame the Queen nor Rudd for the bush-fires. (At least not for all of the bush fires. It may be that extra bush fires have been caused by arsonists and such potential arsonists should have been locked up but even without arsonists it only takes one careless person discarding a cigarette or a piece of glass focusing the sunlight to start a fire - bush fires will happen if is hot and dry sooner or later.)
However, I do blame the Queen entirely for the deaths which could have been avoided by having building regulations and fire-fighting facilities to provide safe places for people to live or to go safe from the fire.
Not just building regulations but also road construction and maintenance regulations come to think of it. There should be a fire break distance between forest and bush and main roads so they cannot be closed when a bush fire happens.
All these measures could not be done overnight but they could be done, should have been done and it is a crime of manslaughter by the Queen that her ministers and state did not insist that it was done.
The Australian military with appropriate help as required from other Australian officials should arrest the Governor General and make a complaint to the international criminal court against the Queen in respect of these fire deaths.
They also need to write themselves a proper republican constitution which allows the people to elect a president as head of state.
Instead, the royalists are getting Rudd to sign up to the idea of having a royal commission to investigate these fire deaths. A royal commission! It is the royalists who have caused these deaths in the first place. They will never point the finger of blame at themselves where the true blame belongs.
Rudd is an idiot.
Peter I am sorry but we have already experienced one idiotic comment on this thread. We do not need more.
You are correct, the Queen is head of state. That means nothing.
The Queen has no power. The failure to convert wooden houses etc is all down to the fault of your local authorities and your Prime Minister.
You are blaming someone who has no bloody control over this event and probably does not know about it. The Queen does very little. In Britain she does not even give the Royal Ascent herself...
Peter it really is sad that you blame the queen for this.
Why don't you blame the fires on whoever lit them.
Why can't Jesus eat M&Ms?
Because they keep falling through the holes in his hands!
Jesus may love you, but he won't respect you in the morning.
Yes, you are quite right, and in subsequently saying that both State and Federal government should shoulder some of the responsibility if the enforcement of local regulations have been ignored. However as I've already pointed out, bush fires are endemic in Australia, everyone from house owners to the authorities at all levels knows that, and the enforcement of fire safety regulations is a local issue which only idiots would ignore. To keep trying to pass the blame further up the chain of government is ridiculous.

Peter, I am sorry to say this, but you are the most pathetic scumbag I have come across.
Yes that was innappropriate, but this 'person' has posted this same trash at another forum I post at, causing great offence, not only to me, but to hundreds of other people worldwide who have been hearing about this tragedy and constantly asking if I am okay.
Three of these fires were burning just 20 kilometres down the road from me, at least one lit on purpose, killing an innocent disabled man.
181 people have died so far, with 100 more people expected to have died in Marysville. People ran from the flames but the fire travelled at 120km per hour and they didn't stand a chance, they were literally vapourised.
For someone like Peter to post this garbage, and blame the Queen, instead of Mother Nature and the scumbag firebugs is disgracefully offensive. Perhaps Peter should come over here and take a trip around what is left of Marysville and Kinglake because that seems to be the only way he will ever grow some compassion for the innocent people who have lost their lives and homes.

A man was arrested and charged in relation to the Churchill blaze which killed 21 people. He was charged with one count of arson causing death, one count of lighting a bushfire, and one count of possession of child pornography.
I am wondering where the murder charges are.
His legal aid lawyer claims the man has a 'fragile' mental state. Don't they all?![]()
