From the cited article:
Are not these the 'problems' that sanctions are designed to cause so as to force the sanctioned to conform to the wishes of the those imposing the sanctions?According to one of the Washington Post articles, during a private talk Medvedev expressed a set of objections concerning the possible sanctions, including the actions which might cause economic problems in Iran, result in financial crisis, or lead to a change of ruling regime.
It would appear that President Medvedev stated his 'necessities' in reverse order of their actual importance....I have naturally said that I, as the president of the Russian Federation, will proceed from two necessities – the necessity to persuade Iran to follow the rules, and national interests of our country.
With Russia, and now China, involved I don't foresee any meaningful sanctions coming from the Security Council, but then what else is new when it comes to the UN.
