No prizes for guessing that the gangs in question are mostly non-white. They include the Old Trafford Cripz, named after one of the most notorious black LA gangs. Long established black gangs in Moss Side have spawned offshoots such as the Young Gooch and the Longsight Crew, and the relatively new Somalian immigrants now have their own gang called Somalian Mandem.

Contrary to the implication in the article, my recollection of Manchester gangsterism in the early 1990s was that the white Salford gangs and the black Manchester gangs rarely clashed and kept to their own turf, mostly dealing different types of drugs. In fact the most prominent white Salford gangland killer, Dessie Noonan, was an active anti-fascist heavily involved with the notorious Manchester & Salford AFA and Searchlight's northern man Steve Tilzey.

The only member of a mainly black gang to be killed by Noonan's mob (AFAIK) was actually white: "White Tony" Johnson.
