Angry Driver committed more than 50 offences

A 21-year-old man, who left an innocent driver on the brink of death in an horror crash in Bradford, has been jailed.

David Shaw, 62, suffered life-threatening injuries and had to be revived three times in hospital after his car was hurled into a garden wall when it was struck at high speed.

Leeds Crown Court was told Mr Shaw had been driving his Volvo in Bradford Road, Birkenshaw, in March this year when it was hit side-on by an Audi driven by Arron Tinker at the junction of South View Road and North View Road and sent into a spin.

Prosecutor Nicholas Lumley said witnesses said the Audi, which had been hired by Tinker's girlfriend, had failed to stop at a give way sign and estimated its speed at between 60mph and 70mph.

Mr Shaw had to have his spleen removed, suffered broken ribs and a broken pelvis and had to have a number of operations. His wife, Diane, 59, who was a passenger, suffered broken ribs and other injuries.

Tinker, who had committed more than 50 offences of taking or interfering with vehicles, was trapped in the driver's seat of the Audi but still struggled to flee the scene. But he was detained by three members of the public until police arrived.

The Recorder of Leeds, Judge Peter Collier, QC, told him he had devastated the lives of the Shaws and had a reckless and cavalier attitude to driving.

He praised the bravery of those who detained Tinker, of Bramley, Leeds. "They had no regard for their own safety, to capture this man who had committed that horrendous act," the judge said.

Tinker, who pleaded guilty, was jailed for 21 months for aggravated vehicle taking, with a further four months for dangerous driving. He was banned from driving for five years.

His barrister, James Bourne-Arton, said it had not been a prolonged dangerous piece of driving.

Yet more disgraces from the police/government not locking up the cretins.

50 driving offences and he is still free to drive on the roads, what a load of ********.
