Apparently the new government are going to weed out the bad teachers, reduce class sizes and allow all existing state schools to convert to Academy status but I'm not at all sure whether Academy status will be a good or a bad thing. Any ideas?
Well, I can't say I know much about Academies as such, but surely any move which can raise the standards of education and reduce class sizes can't be all bad! The amount of bureaucracy and changes in targets and standards in education over the last decade and a half have been bewildering and have significantly, and adversely, affected students both moving from junior to senior education and from senior education into further education, as witnessed by the UK's slide down the international league tables.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
