| Macedonia - EU and Europe Hi, I am a Civil Engineer in my thirties. My profession indicates that I do not have any contacts with the politic but it affects my life and the life’s of my family. Since I am a Macedonian, I am deeply concert and in several cases humiliated by the attitude of EU and handful of EU Officials. Usually I would not engage in this kind of forums, but recent events sparkled this outrage in me that I had to do something. Now I had two choices, one to start writing a diary (to my imaginary friend) for which I think I am a bit old EU is the promised place to live for millions and millions of non Europeans. Is it really that? Certainly not. Especially not as a 70 year old man from Macedonia is imagining the life in the EU. Those elderly people thinks that in the EU everything is just working perfectly like a Swiss clock. But even Swiss clocks are getting broken, But try to explain that to a man who has lived thru at least four different regimes and one world war. It is simply impossible. No one can explain that to them. They are not going to believe to anyone…..except the EU it self. If EU does something horrible they will start to rethink their stand. And unfortunately EU is doing that. EU, as perfect as it thinks it is, again is setting double standards as a goal needed to be achieved in order to become EU member. I am sick and tired from double standards. I am sick and tired of political decisions. First Greece was accepted in the EU just because the fear of SSSR (as per Mr.Huntigntot’s analysis in the book The Clash of Civilizations.). Political decision was the acceptation of Cyprus and also Bulgaria and Romania. Now the EU is giving the opportunity to Serbia as well, to accelerate the process and strength the ties between Belgrade and Brussels, just for political reason (the independence of Kosovo) even tough Serbia is far, far behind the so called Western Balkan states (Macedonia, Croatia and Albania). The EU is blindfolded and continuously is accepting Russian Trojan horses in its coral. Greece, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Romania and now Serbia. I will just give two short captions from the Huntingtons book The clash of the Civilizations: “ [Greece] … has permitted Russia to establish a significant presence in Greek Cyprus, and as a result of “their shared Eastern Orthodox religion,” the Greek Cypriots have welcomed both Russians and Serbs to the island. In 1995 some two thousand Russian-owned businesses were operating in Cyprus; Russian and Serbo-Croatian newspapers were published there; and the Greek Cypriot government was purchasing major supplies of arms from Russia.” And also: “Bulgarians and Romanians see the great advantages of being part of the West and being incorporated into its institutions; but they also identify with their own Orthodox tradition and, on the part of the Bulgarians, their historically close association with Russia and Byzantium.” In the other hand Macedonia is a small country of around 2 million inhabitants. It has never had any strong relations with Russia, despite Macedonian Orthodox religion. Macedonian Orthodox church is not recognized by the Russian one, Bulgarians are not recognising the Macedonian language, Greeks are not recognising the name Macedonia, and the Serbs are thinking that they own the place. However despite all bad things that happened in the region, and despite the responsibility that NATO had with the bombardment of Yugoslavia and the huge refugee wave it produced (300 000 people entered Macedonia, that is 15% of the countries inhabitants, it is like UK accepting 9 millions refugees in only 2 months) and changed the demographical picture for ever, Macedonia stood strong on the opinion that Macedonia should join NATO and also EU. But once again we are confronted with new hurdles on our road to those institutions. The new thing now is that the EU itself is starting to set double standards, dragging Macedonia in potential chaos, not to mention that the Macedonians are becoming day by day more and more humiliated by Brussels and its diplomats. Today, I have read an article in one of the biggest Macedonian Newspapers with the title “The whore standards of Brussels” I am afraid that the people’s feelings are on the edge of just giving up on everything including the EU orientation. Who knows, maybe following Serbia’s example is not so bad after all. Make war here or there and EU will embrace you as equal partner. In the other hand, work hard, suffer all humiliations on top of the embargos placed by EU state, but keeping the spirit as high as possible, and what do you get…a virtual blockade (visas are needed for every developed country in the world except for Japan). Where is EU heading towards? Is EU goal to unite all the countries on the Old continent or does it wants to look like Swiss cheese, with holes all over its territory? No one knows. Not even EU it self. |
