Why Downing Street petitions are ineffective

A recent petition to the Downing St. website, concerning road tolls, attracted around 2 million signatures. Though gaining massive news coverage, it could safely be ignored by the government.
Because it constituted only about 4% of the population it could be classed as a minority point of view.
60,000 votes however, in one constituency, would be a majority and those constituents could rightly demand that their MP represent this opinion in parliament. It would, at a stroke, discourage an MP from following the party line and strengthen parliament and the democratic process. myverdict, an excercise in Direct Democracy, has been launched to canvas the majority opinion on every issue, for every community, from local level to international, in all 244 inhabited countries. If we all got used to making our representatives aware of our opinions, on every issue that concerned us, on a regular basis, we might start to change things for the better.
