Political lying without consequences

I've recently been looking into political lying/scandal in the uk & discovered that there isn't a law to prosecute politicians when they knowingly deceive the public! Basically, politicians are above the law when it comes to transparency in their public conduct. Surely, this means that there is a fundamental gap in our political system?
