| A bid by a Bradford sex shop to start opening on Sundays has caused outrage within the community. The Private Shop has drawn criticism ever since it began trading in Manningham Lane in 2001. This culminated in a demonstration by residents, shopkeepers and councillors last month after Bradford Council gave it permission to continue opening. Earlier this year the store, run by Darker Enterprises, of Barking, Essex, courted controversy when it asked to be allowed to have provocative window displays. This was granted with stringent conditions despite objections. The Council's Miscellaneous Licences Panel has received one official objection to the application to open on Sundays from Manningham ward Councillor Qasim Khan (Lib Dem) who has lobbied the committee before. In a letter to the licensing department, Darker Enterprises states that "due to a typographical error" on the licence renewal form, the Sunday opening hours were omitted. Since the licence was first granted six years ago, the shop has been allowed to open on Sundays from 10am to 4pm, but objectors say it has never done so. Coun Khan said in objection: "I believe the community has been very peaceful and law abiding so far, in the face of persistent provocation by the sex shops. If opening hour variations or other changes were to take place I am afraid it will be very negative for community cohesion in Manningham." He has pledged to speak at the panel meetings. Case law in such licensing applications has stated that moral grounds are not a relevant consideration. Councillor Mohammed Ishrat Mirza (Lib Dem, Manningham) told the Telegraph & Argus he was "disappointed" by the move to try to open on a Sunday, as he thought the matter was dealt with at the last application. "We collected a petition then of nearly 100 signatures and they still got the licence. We strongly object and will be planning another demonstration if it gets through." The Reverend Chris Howson, city centre mission priest for the diocese of Bradford, complained that the application it was a "further erosion of the Sabbath". He said: "My view is that we should keep the Sabbath holy regardless of what the shop is selling. I don't believe that Sunday trading has had a good impact over the last 15 or so years with a horrendous erosion on family life." The panel will consider the application at a meeting on Monday at 10am in City Hall. More words from the Islamics, this story is just like the one of Gillian Gibbons in Sudan. The Muslims in that country are saying that she must respect their way of living etc, so why the hell are the muslims in this country trying to diminish our way of living? Source & Debate |
