| Open Letter to the President on Global Warming OPEN LETTER TO PRESIDENT BUSH ON GLOBAL WARMING: PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH SUBJECT: Global warming Dear Mr. President: I am an Electronics R & D Engineer specializing in biochemical and biophysical instrumentation . I am writing to you at present as a concerned citizen who believes that many are going down the wrong path in regard to Global Warming. Former Vice-President Albert Gore has written the book and produced the motion picture called “The Inconvenient Truth” in regard to Global Warming and has also been instrumental in writing The Kyoto Accords to which many nations have already subscribed. In studying the writings and interviews by climatologists and scientists who have studied climate in many of our leading universities, I am concerned that many of Mr. Gore’s conclusions in this regard are flawed. I would like to delineate briefly the salient points of my research below: 1. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is not a pollutant; it is a natural odorless, tasteless, and colorless molecular gas in our atmosphere that is essential for the life and nourishment of trees and all plant life. It is presently in the concentration of 380 parts per million (0.0380 percent by volume). 2. The concept of the”CO2 greenhouse gas layer” is misleading. A greenhouse in the conventional sense where plants are grown in the wintertime has a glass enclosure which traps the sun’s rays (thermal radiation) inside. In the case of our atmosphere, there is no actual barrier to trap the rays. The principal “greenhouse gas” which prevents the earth from becoming much too cold for life as we know it is water in the form of water vapor and water droplets (clouds). Water comprises approximately 80 percent of the greenhouse gases; CO2 comprises about four percent of this effect with other natural gases making up the balance. Further, convection and conduction in the atmosphere play an important roll, not just thermal radiation. 3. Mr. Gore (who is not a scientist) is confusing cause with effect in regard to CO2 causing global warming; it is actually the other way around. In the earth’s long term history in the periods of global warming, CO2 increase has actually lagged behind (not led) the warming in every case by three or four hundred years. 4. There have been periods in the earth’s history where the level of CO2 in the atmosphere has been much higher than it is today but the earth has been much colder. Changes in the earth’s climate (hotter or colder) have often been not gradual but quite abrupt in terms of years. Change is what the climate is always doing and is the result of our planet’s orbital eccentricities, axial wobble, solar brightness, cosmic ray flux, etc. 5. In more recent times, from the period of World War II to the 1970’s when industrialization made rapid strides the CO2 in the atmosphere markedly increased but the global temperature was not warming but cooling. As a matter of fact, in the 1970’s there was some hysteria that we were going into a rapid ice age where our large cities would be frozen over. 6. It has only been in the last 30 years or so that temperature rise has actually coincided with increase in CO2; many climatologists believe that this has been only coincidental during this period. There has been no long term correlation between the two. 7. For the last eight years there has been no increase in global temperature whatsoever. Some scientists suspect that we are actually going into another global cooling period instead of warming during the next 30 years. In conclusion, Mr. President, considering the above data there does not seem to be any reason to initiate the Draconian measures called for by the Kyoto Accords to attempt to modify the earth’s climate. Such measures would have a negligible effect on our climate but would cause a drastic effect on our nation’s economy; it would be especially hurtful among our lower income citizens in regard to the rapid rise in fuel costs. It is in the right direction to further develop other energy sources to keep our atmosphere cleaner and to decrease our dependence upon oil imports from rogue nations. However, to take such Draconian measures as called for by Kyoto would be a mistake. I would urge you, Mr. President, to resist political pressure to do so.
