Claims made by the University of East Anglia that man-made emissions are causing global warming are to be reassessed by a team of independent scientists.
The university today announced a new inquiry into reports published by its Climatic Research Unit after acknowledging that public confidence in climate science had been undermined by the leaking of e-mails.
A separate inquiry, chaired by Sir Muir Russell, is already underway into the e-mails themselves and allegations that some of the university’s scientists manipulated and suppressed data.
The decision to conduct a second, much broader inquiry into the university’s climate science is an admission that the Russell inquiry will not be enough to restore trust in claims that the world is at grave risk from rising temperatures.
The university is one of Britain’s leading research centres on climate change and helps compile the global temperature record published by the Met Office. This record is used by the Government to justify its targets for drastic cuts in carbon emissions.
The Royal Society, a fellowship of leading scientists, has agreed to help the university select the team which will conduct the new inquiry.
