    Friends of 21st Century Socialism.

    The group is open to anybody ( you don't have to be a socialist ) who cares about such things as the Environment , climate change , world poverty, racism , international trade etc etc
    
    I think we are heading for exceptionally choppy waters with the march for total control of the planet by fundamentalist freemarket capitalists in full stride. Even many Conservatives are frightened by what they are seeing in the present chaos.
    And at the risk of appearing to be a doom and gloom merchant ( which I assure you is against my natural disposition ) things are going to get a whole lot worse before they get better , if indeed they do.
    
    There are alternatives to the present system ( and its shortcomings ) and I think it is important to give them a fairer hearing than our corporate owned media manage to do, for reasons that shouldn't be obscure .
    
    In fact we can see them everywhere around us today , I mean don't forget that universal suffrage ( democracy ), welfare , pensions , universal education , social healthcare are all concessions yeilded to popular pressure and have their origins in socialism.
    
    We can also see our great capitalist leaders of the world using nationalisation to steady the boat ( if indeed it does ) in the current financial meltdown of the global economy.
    If Chavez nationalizes anything he is a left wing extremist such is the hypocrisy of our mainstream political parties and the compliant media which deny us of a free and vibrant press. We have to go to the outer limits to hear any dissenting voices of real gravity.
    
    Talk about smoke and mirrors !!
    
    Anyway , hopefully this group can contribute to the increasing of awareness not only of socialist movements around the world today but also as a debating place for the alternatives these movements champion which are alternatives to the capitalist system we live under ourselves.
    
    I know change is offputting to many but we have reached a point where if we don't seek change we won't be around for much longer to worry about the problems the current system is creating."
