Coroners alarm at 'shambolic' out-of-hours service as woman dies despite seeing 8 doc

Penny Campbell lost her life because she was 'unlucky enough' to fall ill over an Easter weekend, a coroner said.

The GP out-of-hours service was condemned as 'completely shambolic' by a man whose partner of 19 years died after eight doctors failed to recognise that she was seriously ill.

Angus Mackinnon said Penny Campbell lost her life because she was 'unlucky enough' to fall ill over an Easter weekend when her own GP practice was closed.

Instead she called the private service Camidoc but she was misdiagnosed with food poisoning after each GP failed to check their predecessor's notes.

The mother of one was in fact suffering from a severe bacterial infection caused by a routine injection for piles earlier that week.

If the condition had been spotted earlier, her life could have been saved by a course of antibiotics, an inquest heard yesterday.
