Organ Donation

Gordon Brown recently said he supports plans to allow hospitals to take dead patients' organs without their prior consent. A system of 'presumed consent' would mean that organs are taken (if possible) unless the patient has previously opted out.

I personally support this, but i see myself as very biased as i'm already on the donor register so it would make no difference to me. I just wandered what other people's opinions were on this as i presumed most people would support it, but in a recent discussion with a friend they were horrified with this and described it as taking away our freedom.

In a sense I can see his point but surely it is better to possibly save someone's life with the loss of your own, rather than let them die because you want to be buried with all of your organs? (a tad extreme but it could happen!)

I can understand peoples reluctance for this if their bodies or organs were just to be used for medical research purposes but if the new law was strictly concerned with organ donation to another human, what would your opinions be?
