Hi - New to the Forum

    Hi,

Only when times are hard, whether it be on a personal level or a global level, do you get to find out who everybody is!

You certainly find out who your true friends are when the chips are down.

    Sincerely,

    Vanessa.

Hi Vanessa, and welcome to the forum

What you say is quite true, however it's an inevitable fact of life. When times are hard, surely everyone has to look after themselves and their own families as a matter of top priority though. When personal survival (in whatever shape or form) is at stake, other's lives suddenly become far less important. Altruism only goes so far; at what point do you decide to look after number one?

I know you can't draw a strict comparison to the survival of the fittest in the animal world, but that's exactly where we inherited this trait of selfishness from; a form of insurance policy to make sure that our own genes survive into the future.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis

    Hi Vanessa!

Welcome to the nuthouse...sorry, the forum.

What you say is very right. As Green Day says "along the boulevard of broken dreams I walk alone." I prefer that than to have a lot of fairweather friends.

Look foward to debating with you.

    Hello Vanessa,

Welcome to the WS Political forum.
I am sure you will find it an interesting place to debate. However, a word of warning,
Try to ignore Kynaston - All will be reveiled later.

    Regards,
    Grant

So we are all agreed then!

Thanks for your replies. Basically everyone has agreed that you have to look after number one and that's precisely why I belong to U.K.I.P. We just cannot afford to be in Europe!

When things are good, everything can be glossed over. i.e. in a personal relationship "let's go out, let's go for a drink, let's go on holiday etc. etc." Thus avoiding dealing with the problem.

So now we are finding out who our friends are out there in the big, bad world. I think Gordon Brown is going to be very disappointed with Barack Obama!

    Sincerely,

    Vanessa.

    Quoting Obama today:

'the special relationship has not got worse, and will only get stronger'

To paraphrase very slightly. It seems that Obama is quite in favour of strong UK relations... Maybe not so much if Cameron gets in - seeing as he described old 'one is a plebeian' to be 'an amateur - what a lightweight'...

I still love the line in the film 'Love Actually' where the Prime Minister (Hugh Grant) says to the US President, "I love that word "relationship." Covers all manner of sins, doesn't it? I fear that this has become a bad relationship; a relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants and casually ignoring all those things that really matter to, erm... Britain. We may be a small country, but we're a great one, too. The country of Shakespeare, Churchill, the Beatles, Sean Connery, Harry Potter. David Beckham's right foot. David Beckham's left foot, come to that. And a friend who bullies us is no longer a friend. And since bullies only respond to strength, from now onward I will be prepared to be much stronger. And the President should be prepared for that."

Welcome to the forum Vanessa... I hope you enjoy your stay and to see you in debate.

Wouldn't it be great to hear a British PM deliver a speech such as the one in Love Actually - rather than the normal "special relationship" shite that they have become accustomed to. I loved the cartoon in Tuesday's Times - labelled 'Crufts Week' with Obama depicted as a large breed species and Brown sniffing the tail end as a poodle.

I found Brown's speech so cringe making it almost made me ashamed to be British. He was so smug in some places I wanted to punch him, and in others his (almost) begging for US support was pathetic to the point of almost making me sick. Oh and as for 'saving the world', perhaps he could just concentrate on saving the UK before donning his underpants over his trousers and pretending to be superman?

God help us if he gets another term is all I've got to say.

I felt the same way, Brown should be speaking to Britain not the US. I really can't see New Labour getting another term, in fact I believe that it will be a trouncing.

I found it interesting that Brown received exactly 19 standing ovations - the same as Tony Blair when he addressed congress - no planning their then!!

Well that is somewhat reassuring at least as I don't think this country could stand another five years of Brown and his madcap policies.

Was it 19? No wonder he looked so smug then. But why give standing ovations? He's not a gifted classical singer/musician, or a nobel peace prize winner or anything that would basically deserve such treatment.

In truth he's just a politician and not a very good one at that. Personally I would've felt much happier had he been booed into silence - but that's just me.
