Hello
I am from the US, which based on what I have seen from reading a few posts here is not considered a good thing. But I am aware that anti-Americanism is very deep, trendy and widespread. I did not realize it when I first looked over the forum.
I attempted to respond to a couple of posts but I saw a message saying they had to be approved by a moderator before they could be viewed. This seems like an unusual way of running a discussion, but I supposed I'll have to come back in a few days and follow up.
Welcome Timothy. I happen to be very fond of Americans.
Hi Timothy and welcome to the Politics Forum!
Before anything else can I make a couple of quick points about posting in the forum. If you haven't read the rules yet, please do; you can find them here. Knowing what’s appropriate and what isn’t can save everyone a great deal of hassle! You might also find the Guide to Good Posting useful. Also please respect other people’s views; they mightn’t be the same as yours but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re wrong, just different.
If you need help with anything at all, feel free to contact me, or one of the other moderators, via a personal message; details can be found here.
You're right, there is a very considerable anti-American view at the moment, perhaps with good reason, although this isn't the thread to discuss that. However I would add that for the vast majority of people, that anti-Americanism is directed far more towards US government foreign policy than towards Americans as individual people! You're all very welcome here!
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
Timothy, a very warm welcome to the forum! I have personally found most American people to be very friendly on the whole - it was the Bush government that I and many others objected to. With the election of Obama a lot of anti-Americanism lessened somewhat. I have also found your officials very rude and arrogant in the past, but that hardly reflects on the people. There are some aspects of your society, e.g. private medicine, that I could not object to stronger, but again it is little reflection on the people of the country! I can like someone while disagreeing with all of their views.
Some posts by new members need to be approved, but only your first 5 posts or so, it is a system in place to stop automated 'bots' creating an account and spamming the forum with advertisements, and it has pretty much eliminated this problem from the forum. Rest assured that we will check the moderator panel regularly so that you are not waiting too long.
Welcome, and I look forward to debating with you!

Hey Timothy, just to say, although there is a kind of Anti-American feeling over here in Blighty, as Doug said, its more directed towards the government and its foriegn policy than any individuals. Personally, although I hate American imperial agression, I'm a complete media whore and most of my favourite books, TV shows, films and music come from acorss the pond. Most Americans I've met have been great people as well.
Anyway, welcome to the forum.![]()

Hello Timothy,
the more diverse the opinions of members the better for discussion (regardless of nationality) as far as I am concerned so welcome!

Well, I believe I do respect other people's views. So I will follow that rule.

Yes - that is what I sensed. The anti-Americanism is very intense. As for whether there is 'good reason' for that - well, I would say that is questionable.
yay. One of us. One of us. I'm glad you've taken on the role of fighting anti-Americanism tooth and nail even though I haven't helped you all that much...![]()
I must be butter because I'm on a roll.
To be honest, I've had it and I'm doing my best to get my account closed - not sure how that works. If it means being banned, that's fine with me. I really don't care.
Fighting anti-Americanism on this forum is both impossible and pointless. It is literally everywhere. I have better things to do with my time.
