I'm not sure what to say. I'm a scientist (chemist), and have no political affiliations. I've become convinced that I ought to think a little more carefully before voting this year - but the reason behind this will be a thread.
Thanks to Ian the Poet and Opinionated for already welcoming me.

Hi Nick, and welcome to the forum! Since Op's given you the official welcome, all that remains is for me to say enjoy your time here; it really matters not what you affiliation, past experience or interest in politics is, and you'll be far from the only person in the same position. This forum is as much about the social issues surrounding politics as it is politics directly, so I'm quite sure you won't be short of things to say. Incidentally, my BSc was in chemistry and biochemistry, albeit some 30 odd years ago, but a couple of years in a lab was enough for me, though I have kept a general interest up.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised 'for the good of its victims' may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us 'for our own good' will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." -- C.S. Lewis
